How AI is revolutionizing workplace training and development

How AI is revolutionizing workplace training and development

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is dominating world headlines thanks to advances such as ChatGPT, but while mainstream media seem most interested in promoting doom and gloom tales of humanity’s imminent demise, they are failing to appreciate many of the positive ways AI can assist human development.

For instance, within the realms of education and workplace training and development, AI is quickly becoming a valuable asset.

It now has the ability to enhance access to education, improve retention and results within workplace training, and offer learners unique pathways for individualized learning.

Whatever your opinion regarding the future of AI and some of the more ethical questions posed, there is no doubt that AI is revolutionizing workplace training and development.

This article highlights how, and the ways your organization can benefit from these advances.

What is Artificial Intelligence?

Before we consider how AI is revolutionizing workplace training and development, we need to look at what AI is, and how it is developing within the training industry, to give greater insight into its benefits.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is intelligence (the perceiving, synthesizing, and inferring of information) as demonstrated by machines. This is opposed to intelligence displayed by humans or animals.

The scope of AI is very broad but primarily covers the following:

Reactive – for instance, SPAM filters, automated administrative tasks, or basic algorithms for streaming networks. In these cases, AI reacts to real-time situations by observing the live environment. They don’t learn or evolve.

Limited memory – this type of AI gives us everything from ChatGPT to self-driving cars, and machines within this category have the ability to learn from data and extract information from their surroundings in order to improve or adapt.

There are other categories beyond these two levels but they mostly relate to an AI in the future, for example, machines which are able to interpret human behaviours and interact in an appropriate way, or machines which are self-aware.

For now, we don’t need to concern ourselves with AI which exists in purely theoretical ways or are still in early development, as these aren’t linked to training and educational developments which we’ll discuss here.

How AI is revolutionizing workplace training and development

Onboarding, continuing professional development, workplace training, and so on, constitute a large portion of a firm’s budget each year.

However, training can often fall short of expectations (and targets) and have previously been notoriously difficult to implement in the workplace.

With the recent developments and progression of AI though, this is changing.

AI is revolutionizing workplace training and development in the following ways:

AI personalization – traditional workplace training couldn’t account for individual learning styles or different preferences, and abilities. However, AI now offers a greater degree of personalization for learners where they can select their preferred language, progress at a speed that suits them, choose their communication preferences, or customize content, giving them greater control of their personal learning journey.

AI intelligent mentoring and tutoring – AI chatbots are able to engage with learners in a personalized and engaging way giving a more unique experience for every learner. Real-time feedback is a vital tool for successful training.

AI content – content which is created using AI, or augmented content, offers learners a richer learning journey which might include gamification, or visual and audio content. These types of content have the ability to engage learners on every level and encourages user participation. AI also offers adaptive content and assessments ensuring learners are challenged at the appropriate level for their skill base and knowledge.

AI improved access – accessibility had been a major problem in delivering workplace training but with advances in AI this is now a thing of the past. Individual learners are able to connect with training courses anywhere in the world and at a time that best suits their lifestyle.

AI career progression – AI is also able to help learners map out their journey by creating unique pathways for individuals. It can track their progress, map career paths, or predict development requirements.

AI Analysis of training results – AI tools can assist in the analysis of training programmes, giving accurate data relating to course learners, content retention, outcomes, speed, accessibility, and so on.
Workplace training which maximises the use of AI within courses offers a greater ROI for organizations and can save time and money.

Training enhanced with AI ensures organizations are able to scale their offerings, reaching more employees, and can improve company culture, employee performance, and engagement with training.

AI enhanced training can help organizations to:

Attract, retain and retrain employees

Improve employee performance, productivity and contentment

Develop flexibility and innovation within training programmes and the organization at large

AI is transforming training by making it more personalized, adaptive, interactive, and efficient. It has the potential to revolutionize how individuals learn and acquire new skills, leading to improved educational outcomes and professional development.
